Inspiration: “Spooky” Prompt for DeviantArt’s Drawtober Challenge 2023

Purpose:
The purpose of this piece was to create a painting using the prompt “Spooky” on deviantArt for the Drawtober challenge.

Information:
This piece was a lot of fun and very challenging for me. Most of my art is bright, colourful, and cheerful, but as my prompt was “spooky” and my subject was a group of inky cap mushrooms I aimed to go a little darker and use more black than usual. Admittedly, this final piece was round 2. I initially started out too dark and decided to just start over. The final piece consists of several layers of brown and grey watercolour washes with pencil crayons on top to introduce a better texture, more defined shapes, and deeper tones.

When I look deep into the mushrooms I imagine walking through an Inky Cap Mushroom forest, shrunken down like Alice, or maybe the mushrooms are LARGE. They’re at the stage where they’re decaying, and turning into ink. Dripping and turning everything near them black.

Next summer I hope to collect some of these mushrooms and try my hand at using them as natural ink. This piece was based on a photograph I took of some ink caps in my backyard.
