Inspiration: Wedding Reception Photo by my Cousin-in-law

In 2020 my partner Edward and I got married! We were booked for June 13, 2020, and, well, I’m sure you can guess what happened. We did get married because a family friend was only able to legally marry us for that one day in a pilot program, but we had to move our reception to 2023 when we were finally able to have it safely.

This piece is based on a photo my new cousin took of me while we played around with a couple cameras. Covid changed both my husband’s and my career paths, so we couldn’t afford our photographer anymore. She nailed it though.

My original goal was to paint a quick piece for my sketch journal to contribute to a spread discussing the day and sharing photos. By the end of it, I had accidentally created a fully realized piece of art. The actual piece will be framed in a series eventually, but a printed vinyl sticker now lives in my journal.

This piece was surprisingly fun. I drew 4 very poor warm-ups before I reached this, but after that, it was a perfectly blissful experience. One of those days where what you want falls magically onto the paper.
